The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit organization commited to expanding sustainable building practices. The USGBC is a committee based, member driven and consensus focused. The USGBC developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. For additional information about the USGBC, go to www.usgbc.org.

LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based, market driven (green) building rating system which evaluates environmental performance from a whole building perspective over a building’s life cycle, providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a "green building." LEED is a third party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.

The LEED rating system is organized into five environmental categories:

Sustainable Sites (SS)
Water Efficiency (WE)
Energy and Atmosphere (EA)
Material and Resources (MR)
Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ)
Innovation in Design (ID)

Each category has numerous credits which projects can "achieve" or "earn" points. Once a building has achieved a LEED rating it is known as a LEED "certified" building.
